Trying to keep afloat in a sinking financial boat...

Mimzy started this conversation

I've been struggling since my online business ended last Dec. and a couple family members moved in due to lost work. (a truck driver can practically live in their truck - so being out of work, not having the truck any more caused a housing issue.)

My kids and I have been scrapping metal. They gather cans, metal junk from around the neighborhood just to help out with paying the utilities.
My disability (SSI) only covers a little now. The mortgage was increased almost $100 due to an escrow imbalance I was told. But I'm also trying to get a modification to reduce the 10.84% as well as reduce the payments a couple hundred dollars. It would be easier to pay for the utilities if the mortgage wasn't so high.

Since I've no central H/AC I've got to use an air conditioner in one or two rooms in the high heat of summer & space heaters in the colder months. It's not very efficient and the elect. bill can get high.
Currently I'm behind on all my bills, trying to just pay what's overdue so I can keep things connected.

I've been searching craigslist for gigs, work and for a few items I need. My oven died last Nov. and I've not been able to replace it yet. I have to double up the boys due to extra people in the house - so I'm needing a twin bunk bed. I've two quilts, so if it's the wooden kind with the built in pad we won't need a mattress. I've seen them at the thrift shop for $199 - but I just can't get it.

I've a very extra large lawn care bag full of female clothing - from young girls to teens or women. I've not been able to sell it yet - $20 for that big bag is a steal - there's rather costly items in it from over the years. A 100% silk skirt, some lounge wear and little girl dresses. I'm already working on a second bag - plus I have a bag full of male clothing too. Jeans, shirts - mostly young boys things.

I've been able to stay afloat with help from family, friends and being very financially thrifty with what money I get. I make a little over 1K a month in cash IF the child support comes in. (Last year I got a dollar for Dec. - it made the month harder to get through.) I've used MyPoints for the last year to get Walmart gift cards with points to help with cash items needed. (TP, dish soap, laundry soap, foil, garbage bags, etc.) But it does take a while to get up enough points to redeem for a gift card.

I've had family and friends send gift cash to PayPal so I could use the debit card to pay bills. Some local friends have deposited cash into my account or paid directly to the elect. - water - cable too. Especially if I do work for them. I've been a web/print designer for over a decade. I've done wedding packages, funeral packages and all kind of web design work.

I'm needing help this month due to the elect. being so high. I've been able to cover the water, part of the cable and the mortgage. But I could only put down almost half of the elect. (I'm needing about $250 for the rest of the cable & elect.) I've got about a week before I'm in danger of the elect. being disconnected. I've got to get up the rest and at the moment I don't have any real prospects.

There isn't enough cans, metal junk saved up to help much. I've not been able to find any work yet and I'm really starting to worry about being able to handle things much longer. This kind of stress isn't healthy, my own health issues have been aggravated by it. Plus feeling helpless, depressed and desperate can be very wearing physically.

If anyone has any suggestions, advice, assistance or anything. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading my post.

in response to Mimzy...   Thats a terrible company to do that to you.
Its shameful how so many people cunned people into getting bad mortgages.

Oh your idea of a farm sounds so nice. Really nice. I hope you get it. Never give up. The L-rd works in mysterious ways.

in response to ekikaseven...   Unfortunately what you read is right...it's been that way since I got the loan and currently it's serviced by Litton Loan.
Yep, good ol' LL owned by Goldman Sach's...just my luck right?
I paid almost 3yrs to my mortgage purchaser before my mortgage got bundled up and sold to them an now I have the LL goons to deal with. I've been trying for a modification and two weeks later they stated my escrow was too low and upped my payment almost $100!
I was having trouble paying the original, with that increase things have gotten even more difficult than before.
We don't go out any more, we have cut everything...only the net is on and that my sister pays for me.

I got that loan and after moving in, one of my cousins a pre legal student looked it over and said I got sc*wed cause they'd done some fancy "creative financing" to get the loan approved. Added additional money at the table and then had some other papers including a waiver.
The agent that I'd contacted to help me find a place must have seen an opportunity to cash in since I can't see the documents. He was to read the papers for me and let me know what it was for. Well, he betrayed me...my cousin found out later that the lady selling was the daughter of the owner. Both the mother and I were pretty clueless to what was really happening at the closing.
They added income that wasn't real, then the loan officer was the sister in law of the daughter! I wish that I had acted on the suspicions I had. But I was being pressured to move out of the rental I was paying $500 for - that place could have easily fit into a corner of this place and the payments were less. So I went ahead with it.
We have been her for 12 yrs in this house and I've had to fight Litton Loan every inch over 3yrs while they tried to take my house away...finally just before they tried auctioning it off out from under me I filed for chpt 13 to stop them...and for 5yrs it did. Even though they tried to pull things the court slapped them down. But now that my protections are gone, they have started again this year. That's why I tried for the modification...but what I really wish is that someone would buy the mortgage from them and free me from this torment.
I only owe 30k on it but it's valued at about 49k - true that the place isn't as kept up as it could be. Many things they said worked and got passed, didn't and I think were paid off or faked. The termite pass failed when I had my son move two wooden spools in the back yard when we moved in. There were termites in them and we had them hauled off.
The heat system somewhat passed, yet it gave up the ghost that very Sept. Thankfully I made sure the HomeShield was included for the first year. But shortly after the second year I had to let it go...as it was just too much.

I'd be happy in a nice double wide - (no more stairs...sigh) on a bit of land where I can have a garden, maybe a few animals and feel safe. I lived on a working farm, so I have the knowledge - plus the kids would love having the room to run about. Since I don't drive I would love a buggy with a horse or mule - figure one of us can see the way. lol

I don't know what's going to happen to me...if I had a little 5ace place I'd have room to put in another DW for my older kids too..or if they run off to go to college or get married then I could have my sister move in (I'd ask my mother, but she'd just make excuses not to move...stubborn...lol)
I think I'd be content to have room to plant a nice grove, have some animals and just be outdoors more. Being indoors hasn't helped my health that's for sure. I'm like a outdoor plant someone has stuck inside too long.
I don't think I'd have so many health issues either if I could get some fresh veggies and such. Plus I've loved being green before it was the in thing to do. I like solar, wind and water energy - get off the grid..though I wouldn't mind having city sewer - I know how to keep the other kind clear...lol

Plus 5acres is min for a family farm...which gives me the ability to get free trees to plant, sample plants and even have a pond stocked. I can have an area made friendly to wildlife, plant milkweed and other wild plants to attract various species. I'd love to get a tree stand set up with a survey hut...for observation.
I think the kids would love that - they could bring me pictures of all the animals they watched.

Well, time to stop daydreaming and get back to reality. I prefer only renting here in realilty, my favorite place and home is my imagination. Can't really blame me...it's a lot nicer there lately.

Oh sweetie,
Are you saying the mortgage company is charging you 10.84%? I am hoping that I am reading this wrong. If its true, that is highway robbery. That company should be in 'jail'.

Life does bring many things, any many times the things we go through are unwelcomed.
My heart goes out to you. I wish I could take away your pain & struggles. As hard as it seems, it will make you stronger. Now, I know that is of no comfort at the moment. But, this too shall come to pass. Nothing lasts forever. Whether bad or good, nothing lasts forever. Your struggles are only for a season. Joy cometh in the morning.

Sending you hugs & cheers

in response to goodnewsforyou...   No that was ages ago and I gave it to my best friend when he decided to ask his soul mate to get married - it was used as the engagement ring.
(he was like my little brother...lol) They didn't have much income, but together they'd have a better chance. So it felt good and I got another sibling in the bargain. lol

Like I needed any more - I come from a large family - 14+ kids! I'm the oldest born, with a foster sister older than myself who I never did know. Always wondered what became of her...

Sorry to disappoint you...Barclay's should still be in business...but there are a lot of nice and affordable places. If you're needing a ring I could find one in your budget range if you wish. LOL

I've always had a knack for bargain shopping...lol guess its not a very useful talent though...if you can't afford to go shopping.

in response to Starshine...   Yes I was an early Freecycle member...I was able to use it before to help others out and get a few things.

But I mostly use Craigslist and the local online classifieds now. I had a friend tell me about aidpage.com...that's how I got on here.

Thanks

in response to goodnewsforyou...   I don't pay for cable/net my sister does since it's that only way I'm connected to the world. I'm homebound mostly due to my disabilities and my phone is a Magic Jack 20/yr via the net. So this is how I look for work, I've a special program that allows me to use the computer since I'm legally blind.
As for selling things, I've sold most of what I've been able to get any real money for. I also give away many boxes of clothes, toys and books to families with children for the holidays. I often find those in need on craigslist or in the local classified site.

I've got clothing and toys, books and such in excess of having a large family which most of which is grown. My youngest is going to be 8 soon. But when you try to sell clothing or toys or even kids books - I've tried the flea market...(Fridays are free to sell, Sat & Sun they charge $5 a table.) a lot of people want things for almost nothing...even before the economy tanked. I had some guy ask to buy one of my rings, an very special ring that had cost the person over $200 - it had diamonds, a pale blue topaz and was 24k gold in an open limited design. It had been bought on sale at Barclay's in NY. (this was back when I worked and lived in a very different circle than that in which I live today. Not everyone that is in a difficult situation today came from middle class. Some of us fell much farther due to injury, medical bills and circumstances we couldn't have foreseen or control.) The guy offered me $10!
I told him that I couldn't accept that, it had a stick with $45 on it. He just sneered - said it was a piece of junk anyway and walked off! I just couldn't deal with that sort of thing and the difficulty of going out there plus spending all those hours out there was hard on me. I've arthritis in both hips, shoulders and knee, plus the accident I had had damaged my spine. So dealing with the pain and that kind of attitudes was not worth it.

But yes, I've cut back on everything I can...I've a water bill, an elect. bill and my mortgage...the phone bill isn't due yet since I got one free year with purchase. (which my sister bought me online.) If my 10.84% would get reduced through the modification I'm trying to get, hopefully dropping my payment - I would have a better chance at keeping things going. But it takes most of my SSI to cover it. Which leaves only the TANIF and Child support - $355 total (when the child support shows up) to cover everything else for the month.

Bad thing is, I will be losing that money in about a year or so. My daughter will be 18 this year. So I need to find a way to replace what I'm going to lose soon.

in response to Mimzy...   you mentioned you have cable - have you considered cutting it off and selling some possessions? Don't sell anything of sentimental value. The rest you can always buy again.

you can negotiate with the electric company to not shut off power. You mentioned you have cable - I would suggest you get rid of all unnecessary expenditure. God bless you in this difficult time. Have you showcased your web design work in a portfolio that people can access?
